The standard DIN EN ISO 4892-2 describes a method in which plastic specimens are exposed to defined weathering effects (temperature, humidity and/or wetting) in a special test chamber with a xenon arc lamp. Conditions are simulated which correspond to the environmental conditions to which a material is actually exposed in end use. A distinction is made between methods A and B. While weathering according to method A corresponds to global radiation outdoors, method B simulates the situation behind window glass. The spectral illuminance of the xenon arc lamp is adapted via optical filters.
The test specimens can be cyclically wetted during weathering. This is done with deionised water by spraying, condensation or by dipping. Relative humidity and temperature are actively regulated and controlled during weathering. DIN EN ISO 4892-2 is part of many OEM standards for initial sample testing.
The exposure of coating materials to xenon arc radiation is described in DIN EN ISO 16474-1.
