The standard DIN EN ISO 16474-1 describes a test method for testing the resistance of coatings to artificial weathering or artificial irradiation. The effects of natural weathering (outdoor weathering) or behind window glass are simulated in the laboratory. Ageing can be accelerated by amplifying the influencing variables.
The coated test specimens are exposed to defined weathering effects (temperature, humidity and/or wetting) in a special test chamber with exposure unit. The wetting with demieralised water can be done by spraying, condensation or dipping of the test specimens. The temperature is determined via a black standard thermometer and readjusted accordingly.
After weathering, the coating is normally checked for colour according to DIN EN ISO 3668 and gloss according to DIN EN ISO 2813, as well as for coating damage according to DIN EN ISO 4628, with special focus on blistering, cracking, chalking, delamination and, in the case of metallic components, rust formation.
The exposure of plastics to xenon arc radiation is described in DIN EN ISO 4892-2.
