Contamination of components

Contaminations may occur at all process steps. The raw materials can contain foreign material. But also during the subsequent manufacturing process or during transport the product can be contaminated. Depending on the kind of contamination different spectroscopic and microscopic methods are used for characterization during failure analysis.

For the investigation of liquid raw materials the NMR-spectroscopy can be very helpful for characterization of organic contaminations. By the use of this method, even small amounts of foreign material can be identified. For analysis of inorganic pollution within liquids XRF- or ICP-spectroscopy can be used for trace analysis.

Dirt on the surface of a product can be investigated with scanning electron microscopy and/or IR-spectroscopy. The composition, as well as the morphology, provides an indication to the source of the foreign material. For the inspection of inclusions, an appropriate sample preparation is necessary.

Some contaminations are invisible, but lead to problems during further process steps. Typical examples are adhesion problems of paints and glues. For their investigation, very surface sensitive methods are required.

A systematic failure analysis with methods, specially adapted to the defect characteristics, allows to detect the composition of the contamination and often also to analyze its source.
