RoHS measurement

Background

The EU Directive 2011/65/EU ("RoHS" / "Restriction of Hazardous Substances") restricts certain hazardous substances in electronic products to protect the environment and human health. These substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863 additionally included phthalate plasticizers (DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP). RoHS limits these substances to 0.1% by weight (exception: cadmium 0.01% by weight) as the maximum allowable concentration in homogeneous materials. Compliance with these European directives is one of the prerequisites for obtaining the CE mark.

What is to be done?

Conformity with the RoHS Directive is determined by a series of measures that must be taken by all manufacturers and suppliers. One of the most important measures is the analysis and testing of materials for heavy metals, as well as certain flame retardants and plasticizers. Some of the most common analysis here is X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), whereby element screening takes place. This allows the detection of heavy metals and bromine-containing compounds in particular. Gas chromatography (GC-MS) is used to screen samples for organic substances such as plasticizers (phthalates) in more detail. It is important to note that the analyses are performed in an accredited laboratory.

Make sure that your products meet the requirements of the RoHS Directive and do not contain harmful or banned substances.
