Thermal analysis and thermal testing

The following list briefly explains the principle of some of our thermal analysis methods.
In addition, typical areas of application are presented as examples:

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)Thermogravimetry TGA

  • In TGA, the change in mass of a substance or substance mixture is measured as a function of temperature and time.
  • Fields of application: Determination of the change in weight of a material when the temperature is increased by evaporation, decomposition, reduction or oxidation. Determination of material proportions in mixtures.

Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

  • DTA and DSC are used to measure the amount of heat given off or absorbed by a material as a function of temperature.
  • Fields of application: Determination of glass transition temperatures, melting enthalpies, degree of crystallization, heat capacity, decomposition point, ...

Heat distortion temperature and softening temperature according to Vicat

  • The heat deflection temperature and softening temperature are a measure of the temperature resistance of plastics. The temperature at a specified edge fibre elongation or at a defined softening of the material is measured.
  • Fields of application: The measured variables provide information on the practical continuous use limit of thermoplastics.
