Thermodesorption analysis of organic emissions

An analysis according to VDA 278 is used to characterise non-metallic automotive materials with regard to volatile (VOC) and condensable (FOG) emissions. In this process, the substances released from a heated component are separated by gas chromatography and identified by means of their mass spectra (GC/MS). This allows not only a determination of the total emission, but also an evaluation and quantification of the individual components. Thus, an analysis according to VDA 278 enables an estimation of the effects of emissions and a targeted improvement of a product with regard to its emission behaviour.

VDA 278 is part of the delivery conditions of Daimler, BMW, Porsche and VW. At GM/Opel it corresponds to the test specification GMW 15634.

Depending on the OEM's regulation, different maximum values for VOC and FOG are applied or exclusion criteria apply for certain substances (< 1 µg/g).
