Thermal Desorption Analysis for Organic Compounds

A VDA 278 is applied to non-metallic automotive materials and is a quantitative analysis of the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and condensable substances (FOG). The thermally extracted substances are focused on a cryotrap and subsequently analyzed in a GC/MS. This allows for the quantification of the total emission as well as the individual substances, which can be identified by their mass-spectra.

The VDA 278 is part of the delivery specs of Daimler, BMW, Porsche and VW. GM/Opel uses the corresponding GMW 15634.
